Bio-tech Engineering

About Department

Thadomal Shahani Engineering College (TSEC) is one of the prestigious engineering institutes under University of Mumbai. TSEC took an early note of importance of Biotechnology in future industrial and social development and hence was first college in Mumbai to start with B.E Biotechnology Degree course in year 2004 approved by AICTE, India.

Department of Biotechnology, TSEC focuses on various areas of study like Applied Microbiology, Biochemical Engineering, Bioprocess and Enzyme Technology, Unit operations, Plant Tissue Culture, Immunotechnology, Genetic Engineering, Bio informatics, Fermentation Technology, Downstream Processing, Bioseperation Techniques, Food Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology, Protein Engineering, Agriculture biotechnology etc which are required for socio economic developement.

After a BE Bio Tech degree, students can find jobs in various  companies, research labs and institutions in India. However, most Indian students tend to go abroad to pursue their masters or doctorate studies in Biotechnology and allied fields. Some students also shift to MBA and enter the world of business, finance and banking as their engineering background gives them the required quantitative skills to excel in these sectors. Also, many students shift to software through on-campus placements.

Students with biotech degree may find jobs in various quarters like biochemical, bioprocess, fermentation industries, biofuel, bioenergy, non conventional energy firms, pesticides, agrochemicals, seed research, genetically modified products, genetic engineering, drugs and pharmaceuticals, health care, biofertilizers, fine and heavy chemicals, specialty chemicals, textiles, leather, perfumes, aroma, food industries, petrochemical, pulp and paper, biopolymer (plastics), Environment management and pollution control, Waste management, disease research, eco-conservation, vaccines, energy production and animal husbandry, Enzymology, bioinformatics, drug designing,  Bio instrumentation, clinical research, etc.

They can also work for government agencies and design and consulting firms like environmental regulation and pollution control, microelectronics and information technology, sustainable development (development that addresses economic, ecological, cultural, and political considerations).  Various research labs in India  like CCMB, CSIR), JNCASR, NCBS, CSIR-IGIB, NIPGR, NIO, NBRC, NEERI, NCL, NCCS, RGCB, CSIR-IMTech , MSSRF, NII, CSCR etc.

They may also be strongly competitive for admission to top universities conducting courses  in chemical engineering , biochemical engineering, hospital management, health management, medical schools , law school,  patent or corporate law. They may be also get enrolled in Master of Business Administration programs with the goal of moving into management in industry. They may also be drawn to entrepreneurship.

They can get advanced training in traditional chemical engineering areas (thermodynamics, chemical reactor analysis and design, fluid dynamics, mass and heat transfer, and chemical process design and control) and emerging areas such as biotechnology, biomedicine, materials science and engineering, nanotechnology, and sustainable development.

Various B.E final year projects are carried out with organizations and institutes like GlaxoSmithkline pharmaceuticals ltd, IIT-Bombay, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Haffkine, BARC, NIRRH, RCF, BPCL, HPCL, Bharat serums And many more…
