The Chemical Engineering Department at Thadomal Shahani Engineering College (TSEC) has been a cornerstone of chemical engineering education since its establishment in 1983. As the oldest privately run chemical engineering department affiliated with the University of Mumbai, it has continually evolved to meet industry demands by enhancing its academic framework and upgrading its facilities, providing students with advanced knowledge and practical exposure.
The department is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and supported by a highly accomplished faculty and dedicated non-teaching staff. It ensures a structured learning environment with well-equipped laboratories, safety protocols, a dedicated computer lab, and air-conditioned classrooms with digital teaching tools.
Since its inception, the department has nurtured generations of chemical engineers, with students consistently excelling in university examinations and making significant contributions to industry.
During the academic year, the department organised several activities that integrated learning with creativity and collaboration. These include CheMystery 2024, a science-based mystery-solving event promoting analytical thinking; Chemergence 2024, an annual symposium bridging students with industry experts through competitions, mock interviews, and lectures; Prof. N. R. Kamath Quiz ChEQ 2025, a prestigious intercollegiate quiz competition for aspiring engineers; and Project Demo Day 2025, an exhibition of innovative student projects evaluated by alumni who are now industry professionals.
To strengthen industry exposure, the department has organised industrial visits to GVS CIBATECH PVT LTD and Amar Equipments, allowing students to gain firsthand insights into real-world industrial processes. Additionally, it actively encourages student participation in student outreach programs organised by Chemtech Expo, where TSEC has consistently had the highest number of participants. This commitment was recognised when faculty members were honoured with the Best Campus Ambassador Award for their efforts in promoting student engagement.
The department has cultivated strong industry and alumni connections, providing students with real-world exposure through industry mentorship for BE projects, facilitating the application of academic concepts in professional settings; mock interview sessions conducted by alumni during technical festivals; internship opportunities at esteemed organisations, including IIT, ICT, BARC-BRIT, Thyssenkrupp, NPCC, Sureflow, AGR, and others, facilitated through alumni networks; and expert lectures and workshops featuring professionals from academia and industry.
Recognising the significance of continuous learning, the department offers certificate courses that extend beyond the syllabus, including Excel & VBA for Chemical Engineers, Scilab Applications & Research Methodology, and Simulation Techniques Using UNISIM, conducted by Prime Minister Research Fellows from IIT Mumbai. The department also holds academic licenses for advanced simulation software, such as PETROSIM and UNISIM, generously supported by alumni contributions, ensuring access to industry-standard modelling tools.
Beyond academics, the department fosters community engagement, leadership, and professional development through events such as the annual Alumni Meet, which reconnects graduates from various batches and strengthens professional networks, and the Convocation & Farewell Celebrations, which commemorate student achievements and milestones.
With its strong academic foundation, research-driven approach, and industry-oriented mindset, the Chemical Engineering Department at TSEC continues to shape future leaders in chemical engineering, empowering students to excel in innovation, research, and professional success.
